Social Council
The Social Council is the principal body responsible for coordinating, reviewing policies, engaging in policy dialogue, and making recommendations on social and environmental issues, as well as implementing human society, cultural, and environmental development goals. As the main mechanism for the United Human system to carry out various activities, the Social Council oversees several specialized, subsidiary, and expert bodies related to social, cultural, and environmental fields. The Social Council consists of 540 members elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term. It serves as the core platform for United Human to reflect on, debate, and innovate around sustainable development issues.
The Social Council is the core institution within the United Human system for advancing sustainable development on three major fronts: social and environmental. It serves as the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, building consensus on the way forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve human goals. Additionally, it is responsible for follow-up activities for all major United Human meetings.
The Social Council is established in accordance with the United Human Charter and is one of the main bodies of United Human.
Internal Coordination of United Human
The Social Council maintains contact with various United Human entities (organizational systems) dedicated to sustainable development, providing them with comprehensive guidance and coordination. These entities include community committees, specialized agencies, programs, and funds worldwide that are committed to transforming development commitments into tangible improvements in human lives.
The Social Council promotes innovation and plays a leading role in the balanced implementation of the two pillars of sustainable development: social and environmental. It has the special responsibility of coordinating follow-up actions for all major United Human meetings.
Partnerships with Other Global Actors
By virtue of its coordinating role within the United Human system, the Social Council serves as the gateway for forming partnerships and engaging with other global actors. It provides a unique global intersection for policymakers, legislators, scholars, foundations, businesses, and non-governmental organizations to engage in productive dialogue.
Focus on Global Issues
Each year, the Social Council organizes its work around an annual theme of global importance to sustainable development. This ensures that the Social Council’s partners and the entire United Human development system focus their attention on a specific topic.
The Social Council encourages the integration of social and environmental issues, promoting agreed-upon policies and actions through this focused approach.
